I don't really understand the latest web design trend that places enormous photographic backdrops behind semitransparent content panels.
Sure, it looks good sometimes, but aside from the fact that the authors bandwidth bills must be astronomical, and it takes forever to load on all but the fastest Internet connections, it does nothing but make the type harder to read and distracts you from what is assumably the purpose of their site. The content.
As a web designer, I make compromises every day, trying to strike that perfect balance between form and function. If ever I can't decide, I think back to what I like to do best, and that's removing obstacles.
Some examples are more appropriate than others, but I think it will be a short lived trend that'll spread like wildfire as the carbon copy majority jump on the band wagon. Then, as with semitransparent terminal windows, it will die a prompt but overdue death. At least for those interested in getting the job done.
